Jon joined the firm in 2000. He is an experienced Trade Mark Attorney and partner of the firm, with extensive knowledge of trade mark clearance, prosecution, enforcement and portfolio management. He represents clients of all sizes in many different commercial fields and sectors.
In his role as a Partner and Trade Mark Attorney at SH&P Jon is in regular contact with business leaders and innovators. He advises numerous clients from sole traders to multi-national corporations. He offers assistance on trade mark use and enforcement, brand protection strategy, licensing and anti-counterfeiting in the UK and overseas. For over 17 years Jon has been one of the lead advisers for our biggest client on its global portfolio. He is regularly involved in completing trade mark clearance exercises, devising and implementing global trade mark filing programmes (sometimes involving several hundred simultaneous filings) and subsequent prosecution. He has also assisted clients with due diligence exercises pertaining to multi-billion pound acquisitions of trade marks and brands.
Before joining SH&P Jon spent more than a decade at the UK Trade Marks Registry, primarily working as a Trade Mark Examiner. He specialised in providing advice to applicants without professional representation. The role required Jon to give clear, understandable and jargon free advice. This experience has proved particularly valuable when dealing with new client enquiries, particularly from start-up businesses.
The second of Jon’s responsibilities, is to co-ordinate SH&P’s strategy and plan to grow the business. This includes overseeing day to day marketing of the firm, client relationship development, attendance and speaking at external events such as networking gatherings, business shows and exhibitions, conferences and seminars in the UK and abroad. He is a regular attendee at meetings of the leading global trade mark organisation - International Trade Mark Association (INTA). Jon is actively involved in the firm’s charitable fund raising and has organised its annual golf day for the last 10 years, raising thousands of pounds in the process.
Jon is a passionate supporter of a certain Bristol football team who play in blue and white. When the UK weather allows, he can be found on the golf course or sailing on the challenging waters of the Bristol Channel.
